An epic journey along the traces of Josef Plečnik’s plans and visions, both on land and water, where you’ll get to know, piece by piece, one of Europe’s greatest twentieth-century architects who bestowed eternal beauty and charm on Ljubljana.

This pleasant guided walk around Ljubljana city centre gives you an insight into some of Plečnik’s best works, such as the so-called Plečnik’s Market, part of the Ljubljana Central Market, which was conceived as a two-storey range of riverside market halls and later connected to the Triple Bridge − another of Plečnik’s masterpieces and a unique architectural gem created between 1929 and 1932, when two side bridges intended for pedestrians were added to an existing bridge to form a triple bridge structure. Then there are the National and University Library, Plečnik’s numerous revamp projects along the banks of the Ljubljanica, the Cobblers’ Bridge, the Križanke Summer Theatre, and the Kongresni trg square − to mention just a few located in the city centre.

In the heart of the city, you will embark on a tourist boat that will take you along the Ljubljanica, thus further exploring the famous bridges and picturesque embankments which give Ljubljana its distinctive appearance.

The tour will finish with a visit to Plečnik’s House where you will get a glimpse into his private life while walking around the rooms where many of his ideas were conceived.

Handicraft workshop in Ljubljana's old town

Experience 3: Hands-on handicraft workshop in Ljubljana’s old town

Feeling and watching the clay quickly change shape under your hands on a potter’s wheel is a wonderful experience – whether you’re on your own or in company. This experience is for anyone who wants to try their hand at throwing pottery on a wheel and is suitable for absolute beginners. At the studio of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum (SEM), you’ll be gently introduced to the craft by the academy-trained sculptor and ceramics designer Eva Peterson Lenassi and her associates. In a short time, you’ll master the basic skills of throwing pottery on the wheel, and be able to fashion your unique cup from Slovenian clay.

Clay is the only material used in the studio. Any clay which falls off an emerging product during the creative process is not thrown away but used to create new products. The entire workshop is based on working with clay and a potter’s wheel, so the items are recycled back into clay after the workshop ends.
